By Sadvi Ramnauth, CPABC Campus Ambassador, SFU, Staff Accountant at KPMG (Co-op)
As I reach the last month of my accounting co-op, I find myself reflecting on my experiences during the 2018 CPA Recruit. It was a year of hard work, rejections, achievements, and many new connections. I am grateful for all of the amazing people I have met along the road.
Being a CPABC ambassador gives me the opportunity to help my peers who are curious about or already headed on the same career path. As the 2019 CPA Recruit quickly approaches, I thought I would share a few tips that helped me during the year.
1) Keep yourself in the loop!
There are many resources available at SFU that promote upcoming networking events. Be strategic with your choice of resources, not too little, not too many, and keep up with the weekly newsletters so you can beat the application deadlines and attend all your preferred events.
2) Plan your time!
Going through CPA Recruit can feel like the equivalency of taking an extra course, so it is very important to build your schedule accordingly. You want to make sure that you have time to prep yourself for an event, such as looking presentable and arriving on time with your business cards!
3) Be yourself!
The ratio of students to recruiters can be nerve wracking for many, resulting in an unpleasant networking experience. The key is to not see your peers as your competitors; you are all on the same boat. Engage in light conversations with the recruiters and your surrounding peers, bring up topics that you are genuinely curious or passionate about, and most importantly, be yourself. Remember, the recruiters are here to get to know YOU!
4) Stay in touch!
At the end of a networking event, you will most likely be leaving with a stack of business cards. Do not make the mistake of getting every single recruiter’s card, without properly networking with them. A few who will remember you is better than the many who won’t. Don’t be afraid to strengthen your new connections with coffee chat invitations!
These are just four out of the many ways that you can be successful in your CPA Recruit! Learn from your own experiences and your peers, work hard towards your goals, and don’t forget to have some fun along the way!
