CPA Campus Ambassador Insights: Aletha Gatward, VIU

My name is Aletha Gatward and I am a 4th year accounting major at Vancouver Island University and the President of the Vancouver Island University Accounting Students Association.

What made you decide to become a CPA Campus Ambassador?

I decided to become a CPA Campus Ambassador because of my great experiences with CPABC events in the past. I wanted to become more involved in the Ambassador program in order to share information with my peers about the CPA program.

What do you hope to get out of being a CPA Campus Ambassador?

I hope to spread awareness about the CPA program to my peers and fellow Accounting Students Association members. I also want to be able to answer basic questions about the program that students may have, or easily put them in contact with a CPA representative.

What aspect of an accounting/ business career surprised or interested you most?

I am interested in tax courses and the CPA In Depth Tax program. The CPA path provides countless opportunities for accounting professionals to specialize in virtually any area, which is an exciting motivator to take the CPA path.

What was the deciding factor for you to choose the CPA path?

After attending a CPA info session in my first year, my interest in pursuing a career in accounting increased. Every CPA accountant I met was so relaxed and happy, and I loved hearing about all the different career options a CPA designation could offer. I knew that the CPA path was the right choice for me and could enable me to work anywhere I wanted, from public practice to industry.

What do you hope to achieve in your future career?

I would like to specialize in indigenous accounting long term, after completing my CPA designation and the in-depth tax course.

Can you share an interest outside of school that you are passionate about?

Outside of school, I volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters and am heavily involved with the organization.

Can you tell me one thing about yourself that other might not know, or find surprising?

When I’m not studying, I’m hiking and exploring all the different trails and mountains Vancouver Island has to offer. My favorite thing is exploring the fun areas of Vancouver Island, such as Coombs, Saltspring Island, and the Tea Farms. Alternative agriculture is fascinating and a huge part of the local industry, something I’d love to work in after I achieve my CPA designation.

Campus Ambassadors are student volunteers at your post-secondary institution who help promote the CPA career path on campus. They are valuable points of contact for students who have questions about the accounting profession, particularly regarding the CPA Professional Education Program. Click here for a complete list of ambassadors and their contact information.
