CPA Campus Ambassador Insights: Alana Palu, Douglas College

Hello, my name is Alana Palu and I am in the Post Baccalaureate Degree in Accounting at Douglas College. This is a two-year program from which I anticipate to graduate in April 2020. I am originally from Brazil and I have been living in Vancouver for almost 8 years now. I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality.

What made you decide to become a CPA Campus Ambassador?

I decided to become a CPA Campus Ambassador because I believe all students in the business/accounting field should know about the CPA Program and how this designation can benefit their career.

What do you hope to get out of being a CPA Campus Ambassador?

Coaching and Networking Opportunities. I hope to learn how to give advice to students that come to talk to me, and I want to get more networking opportunities because I believe the students I meet at campus, may be my future colleagues or employers.

What was the deciding factor for you to choose the CPA path?

I learnt about the CPA designation through an information session that was held on campus. I remember how excited I was. After that, I also attended the Careers in Business Panel at the CPA office. At this event I listened to four women talk about their career path and how having the designation opened doors and supported their career aspirations.  Right there, I decided I wanted to have my CPA designation.

What aspect of an accounting/business career surprised or interested you most?

From all the information gathered at the information session plus the insights from the professionals who talked to us at the Panel, I realized that becoming a CPA is more than becoming an accountant. CPA is a passport to success. It can open so many doors and steer your career into a direction that you never thought possible. There are myriad of other career choices within accounting. For example, I’ve just learned about forensic accounting and the possibility of working for the RCMP as an investigator in their Commercial Crime Unit. Can you imagine how exciting that is?

What do you hope to achieve in your future career?

Of course, I hope to have my CPA designation, and maybe one day work for the RCMP as a forensic accountant.

Can you share an interest outside of school that you are passionate about?

Going for a workout at Oxygen Yoga. I love their Pilates, ballet and boxing fusion classes inside a hot yoga studio.

Can you tell me one thing about yourself that others might not know, or find surprising?

When I was 15, my dream was to become a professional Chef.  I went to a culinary school in 2012 to fulfill my dream. Obviously, it was not for me.
