A long-time employer partner in CPABC’s CareerConnect employer program, TIO Networks is a cloud-based, multi-channel, expedited bill payment processor that serves the largest telecom, wireless, cable, and utility bill issuers in North America. TIO Networks symbolizes fast, convenient, and secure access to expedited payment services.
TIO Networks recently participated in CPABC’s Speed Interview Night in Vancouver where they sought to find high-energy, team-oriented CPAs and CPA students looking for a challenge in a fast-paced and exciting workplace. We recently had a chance to ask Fred Bantados, CPA, CMA, manager, financial planning and analysis, at TIO Networks some questions about what it’s like to work for TIO Networks.
goCPAbc: Describe the corporate culture at TIO Networks in five words or less.
TIO NETWORKS: Fast-paced, data rich, technology driven.
goCPAbc: What types of clients does TIO Networks work with?
TIO NETWORKS: TIO helps to provide financial solutions to the “unbanked” and “under-banked” consumers in North America. These customers don’t have the traditional bank accounts that most of us take for granted, so they don’t enjoy the same benefits and conveniences that come with having a bank account or credit card. TIO helps our customers by working with major utility, telecom, and retail companies to provide over 65,000 locations where people can pay bills in person. This provides an incredible amount of convenience for customers whose day-to-day financial transactions are conducted without a debit card, credit card, or chequing account.
goCPAbc: What kind of experience would a student acquire working at TIO Networks that they may not get elsewhere?
TIO NETWORKS: Working at TIO gives you the benefit of working in a small team where you wear multiple hats. You never do just one thing, so you can learn very quickly what you like and don’t like. There are many experienced professionals in the company eager to mentor fresh graduates and students.
goCPAbc: Describe the composition of the accounting and finance team (i.e., positions) at TIO Networks.
TIO NETWORKS: Our finance team at the Vancouver office is made up of 10 people: a CFO, director of finance, controller, senior accountant, staff accountant, payroll and benefits manager, manager of financial planning and analysis and three financial analysts.
goCPAbc: What, in your view, is the single coolest thing about working at TIO Networks?
TIO NETWORKS: Every day is different. There’s always a new project on the go and a new challenge to tackle. You’re never bored and there’s always something to learn.
goCPAbc: Tell me why a student should consider working at TIO Networks?
TIO NETWORKS: TIO provides a great environment to learn while doing. You have lots of opportunities to voice your ideas and experiment with them, to see if they will make processes better. Students today need to learn how to prioritize many different tasks while learning how to deal with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment. This helps the student build the confidence and attitude needed to handle any challenge they may encounter during their career.
goCPAbc: What is something fun your company has done in the past 12 months? (e.g., volunteered as a team, had a fun Christmas party).
TIO NETWORKS: The company hosts a summer barbecue in the park to promote health and wellness and provide a social environment for employees. Last year, the company rented inflatable bubble suits and played bubble soccer with friends and family.
goCPAbc: Give me five qualities you look for in a CPA student interested in working for TIO Networks.
- Eagerness to learn – always ask questions, offer to get involved in new projects;
- Strong work ethic – work through the problem, have pride in your work;
- Tech savvy – understand how technology works and how to use it in a work setting;
- Research skills for finding answers – how well can you Google? and
- Courteous towards others – treat your co-workers like you would treat your customers.
goCPAbc: What value does a CPA or CPA student bring to TIO Networks?
TIO NETWORKS: More than half the team holds a CPA designation or is working towards a CPA designation. The CPA designation provides the fundamental framework for approaching accounting and finance problems and sets the baseline for quality of work for the company.
goCPAbc: If you could give students a glimpse into their future, what’s one thing you would tell them about what’s great about being a professional accountant?
TIO NETWORKS: Being a professional accountant is more than just crunching numbers. You’re trying to tell a story about a company and how the company can do better because of the data behind your analysis. The professional accountants of tomorrow will be doing more than producing financial statements. They will play a key role in every business decision and provide value in all departments outside of accounting.
