CPABC’s employment partner The Ledcor Group recently took some time to answer our questions so that you can get to know their company a little bit better. Ledcor is an extremely diversified construction company working in communication networks, forestry, infrastructure, mining, property development, environmental sustainability, transportation, oil & gas, and much more.

goCPAbc:  Describe the corporate culture at Ledcor in five words or less.

Ledcor: Safety is No. 1, collaborative, supportive, team-oriented and proud.

goCPAbc:  What sort of clients does Ledcor work with?

Ledcor: It varies because we are so diversified as an organization. Our clients include:

  • Shell
  • Telus
  • De Beers
  • Epcor
  • Costco
  • Target.

goCPAbc:  What, in your view, is the single coolest thing about working at Ledcor?

Ledcor:  Hmmm…We have offices in Las Vegas, Hawaii, and the Bahamas!

Also, what really makes Ledcor unique is our True Blue culture. It’s the spirit of family, an uncompromised commitment to each other’s safety, and a shared desire to be part of something exceptional. We’ve grown to become one of North America’s most diverse companies, but we’re still a family-owned company at heart.

goCPAbc:  Tell me why a student should consider working at Ledcor?

Ledcor: If you want to make an impact with the work you do, you should consider working for Ledcor. We have a great buddy system and management is available to support you in your personal career development. We don’t think about a person just in terms of one role, but really focus on how they can contribute to the organization, and see their growth potential.

goCPAbc:  What kind of experience would a student acquire working at Ledcor that they may not get elsewhere?

Ledcor: Ledcor gives students a chance to really do the job, not just observe what others are doing, or do the grunt work that no one else wants to do. It’s an opportunity to get a true taste of the working world, and to contribute as an employee. Because we work in so many different industries, you get exposure to a variety of things, and the opportunity to try different things.

goCPAbc:  What is something fun your company has done in the past 12 months? (e.g., volunteered as a team, had a fun Christmas party).

Ledcor: Each year we organize a Week of Giving Campaign, in which employees participate in a series of fun events while supporting charities of their choice. Some past examples of events include: indoor golf tournaments, pie throwing contests, and carnival style BBQs. In 2013, the company raised $1.1 million for children’s charities (through employee giving and corporate matching).

goCPAbc:  Give me five qualities you look for in a student interested in working for Ledcor.

  1. Proactive – you can’t just sit around and wait to be told what to do, you need to ask questions and find opportunities!
  2. Time management skills – Ledcor is a fast-paced work environment.
  3. Ability to work unsupervised – you are really given the chance to work as though you’re running your own business.
  4. Resourceful – with all of the diversity at Ledcor, you need a good toolbox of skills and the right strategies for finding out what you need to know.
  5. Communication skills – Ledcor is truly collaboratively, and you’ll deal with people in all parts of the organization.

goCPAbc: If you could give students a glimpse into their future, what’s one thing you would tell them about what’s great about being a professional accountant?

Ledcor: As an accountant, if you’re walking past one of the projects that Ledcor has built, you can know that you’ve contributed in your own way to the success of that project. You’re an integral part of a big organization doing some amazing things – and it’s something to be proud of!
